Gelco Chimney Caps Keep Animals out of Your Chimney

Unfortunately this scene happens all too often.  It’s a warm summer evening and you’ve just put the kids to bed. You’re about to sit down on your couch and watch some TV or read a book when you realize that there’s a strong foul odor coming from the fireplace. And then you hear some clawing and other sounds too. Unfortunately you seem to have some guests staying in your chimney. The bad news is that they won’t be moving out any time soon.

Some homeowners might attempt to get rid of their unwanted guests by smoking them out or trying to get them out of the chimney on their own. There are many forms of US legislation such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) that make it illegal to handle or remove any endangered species or migratory birds (including most birds in the US and some squirrels and bats) whether living or dead from inside chimneys. If you have animals living in your chimney we suggest that you call an animal removal specialist. We know many specialists that are qualified and experienced to remove animals from your chimney.

The best solution is to never let it happen in the first place. Installing a chimney cap is one of the most cost effective ways to ensure animals stay out of your chimney. American Fireplace sells Gelco Chimney Caps. Gelco Manufacturing (www.gllchimneyproducts.com) ,based out of Aberdeen North Carolina has been producing stainless steel, copper and galvanized steel chimney caps and other products since 1979.  It was also the first company to introduce the first stainless steel chimney cap and has built its reputation on innovation, quality, durability and customer service.

One of its innovations is the Easy-Clean cap which allows the flue to be swept without having to remove the cap. It’s also the first multi-flue chimney cap with hinged tabs providing more options during installation. Another problem that it solves is those down draft problems which occur when the chimney isn’t the correct height. Gelco caps also set the industry standard for quality, as all caps are cross braced and single flue caps also come with deep double channel base for superior strength.

If for whatever reason there are issues with the product, customers are completely protected by comprehensive warranties. All stainless steel and copper caps come with a lifetime warranty and galvanized caps come with a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials; the only ones in the industry that come with a lifetime warranty. There are basically three types of caps that you can buy for your chimney Single-Flue Caps, Multi-Flue Caps and Specialty Caps.

Single-Flue Caps are sold individually or in multi-packs of 3 or 6 with California mesh & corners for oval flues.  The Multi-Flue Caps come fully assembled with chimney protectors (with Swing Tabs) and are semi-customizable. The Specialty Caps come with Easy-Clean and the Flue Stretcher and the must be custom ordered.

There are several materials to choose from including 304 Alloy Stainless Steel, Galvanized Steel and Copper.       The stainless steel chimney caps provide owners with the best value and are rust proof. Galvanized steel chimney caps are less expensive and are easy to paint.  While copper chimney caps are also rust proof; they are more decorative. Caps come in different mesh sizes such as the commonly used 3/4” or 5/8” that’s used in California & other states requiring stricter spark arrestors such as Oklahoma.

Not only is chimney capping a cost effective solution to keeping animals out of your chimney but it will also prevent rain from entering your chimney. Water damage can be very expensive, causing structural damage to your chimney.
